Malvern College Tokyo's Pre-Prep Programme is not just a place of learning; it is a vibrant community that values the growth of the whole child — academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically.​ We have carefully designed a Pre-Prep programme that will cater to your child's unique interests and needs. Upon enrolment, parents will be invited to complete a "Getting To Know You" form. We ask you to tell us about your child's character, their hopes and aspirations and their favourite toys and activities etc. Together, we will tailor our programme to meet each child's individual needs.

  1. We pay great attention to the design and resources of our playgroup environment. Our teaching spaces align with IB values and beliefs and are inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. We firmly believe that the “Environment is the third teacher.”

  5. In laying the foundations of our Primary Years Programme, we ensure careful and dedicated support for each child’s social, emotional, physical and academic development. We support all aspects of children’s learning, making our Pre-Prep experience enjoyable, safe, meaningful and stimulating. 

Note: This schedule is designed to be flexible, allowing for spontaneous play and adjustments based on the pupil's interests and needs.

Our teachers act as facilitators, observing and guiding the play to ensure a balance between child-led exploration and structured learning. Ample outdoor play and movement activities are incorporated to support physical development and well-being.

Story Time

Stay and play. Gather for a warm welcome and interactive circle timeto build a sense of community. Engage in songs, stories, and group discussions to foster communication and social skills.

Rotate through play centres designed around inquiry-based themes (e.g., a science exploration corner, art and creativity zone, pretend play area. Teachers facilitate learning by asking questions, encouraging exploration, and guiding imaginative play.

Head to the Sakura Garden and outdoor playgrounds for gross motor activities, cooperative games, and free play. Develop physical skills, teamwork, and spatial awareness in our natural and dynamic environments.

Enjoy nutritious snack time together, promoting healthy habits and social interactions. Foster conversations and encourage children to express themselves while enjoying a break.

Engage in a guided inquiry session related to a chosen theme or topic. Explore hands-on activities, experiments or creative projects that encourage curiosity and critical thinking.

Enjoy a nutritious lunch together, emphasising social skills during mealtime. Followed by a period of relaxation, a little nap or quiet activities to recharge for the afternoon.

Rotate through specialised play workshops such as music and movement, storytelling, crafts or art. Enhance creativity, self-expression and skills specific to each workshop.

Reflect on the day's activities during a closing circle time. Share highlights, express feelings, and reinforce learning experiences.Parents are welcomed into the classroom to collect their children.

The Importance of Play 

Children learn through play. Play allows them to develop their imagination and dexterity as well as their physical, cognitive and emotional skills. Play is paramount for healthy brain development. It is through play that children engage and interact with the world around them. Through play with others, children learn important social and communication skills. 

Tuition & Fees

Annual Tuition, One-time Fees, & Sibling Discount

Annual Tuition Fee

The annual tuition fee for the Pre-Prep Programme for the Academic Year 2024-25 is 2.5 million JPY.

Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee of 22,000 JPY to cover the cost of all administrative activities is payable upon submission of your application.

Registration Fee

A non-refundable, non-transferable registration fee of 300,000 JPY is payable for each child and must be paid within 7 days upon receipt of the admissions result, when the parent confirms acceptance of the offer for your child.

Building Development Fee

A non-refundable fee of 700,000 JPY per pupil is applicable for Pre-Prep pupils enrolled for the Academic Year 2024-25. This fee must be paid within 7 days upon receipt of the admissions result, once the parent confirms acceptance of the offer for their child.

This fee will be waived for siblings of founding pupils who joined Malvern College Tokyo in the Academic Year 2023-24.

Sibling Discount

A sibling discount will be offered at 5% to the second enrolled child and 10% to the third enrolled child or onwards. This discount is only applicable to Pre-Prep fees. Once the pupil moves up to Prep 1, the regular tuition fee will be charged.

Payment

All fees are payable in Japanese yen and can be settled by bank transfer.

Admissions

Age Guideline

In Academic Year 2025-26, our Pre-Prep programme is for children at age of 4 years old with their date of birth falling between September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021.

 

If your child's date of birth is outside of this Age Guideline, please consult with our Admissions Team.

Step 1: Online Application (OpenApply)

Step 2: Payment of Application and Assessment Fee 

This fee is paid through a bank transfer of 22,000 JPY per applicant. Details of the bank transfer can also be found on our Online Application Procedures page.

Step 3: Child Assessment and Parent Interview 

Children will be invited to attend an observation session where they will engage in a range of activities.
